Ancilliary text- poster - analysis 02

Both of these posters are examples of billboard film posters.

The top one, the poster for 'hereafter' is in itself very conventional. The placement of images and text (the image on one side, with the text dominating the remaining space,) is typical of any movie poster, yet cleverly utilised and changed to accomodate to the long, horizontal shape of the poster. The colour scheme is representative of the supernatural themes of the film, as blue as a colour is symbolic of such themes dues to its connotations.

The information given on the poster is mainly to inform audiences, (of the films title, the release date,) provide institutional information (the production companies and director,) and also to attract the audience: 'Matt Damon' is placed at the very top of the poster in abnormally large font, as the fact that Matt Damon is in the film will attract fans of the actor, reaching out to a wider audience, and therefore increasing the overall success of the film.

The second poster is very unconventional, yet also interestingly uses the billboard poster's shape. The image is centred and also overlaps the edges of the poster, which is rarely seen.
THe fact that it is the angelic wings overlapping the poster increases the idea of the character beign some sort of superhuman, godlike figure.

his placement in the centre of the image carries religious/spiritual connotations, as well as the fact that he is bathed in light. the rest of the poster is dominated by the film's logo, and the release date.

This poster is almost stripped down to the bare essentials (protagonist image, title, release date,) and i believe the striking qualities of the lone image, and the fact that the image itself overlaps the poster, would be very noticeable and therefore attract much more audience interest than if it were a conventionally sized poster.
